Ickleford votes in favour of traffic calming measures

Press release - issued 18th October 2008

speed humps

Residents of Ickleford have given a clear ‘thumbs up’ to the traffic calming measures which were proposed by Hertfordshire Highways. All households in the village were asked to complete a consultation form which asked residents for their opinions on the plans for four locations in Ickleford. There was also a lively public meeting attended by about 120 people during which the proposals were discussed with representatives from Highways and Ickleford Parish Council. Completed consultation forms were collected over the last week, and the results have now been counted.

59.7% of residents filled in the form. The two most controversial proposals, for a raised pedestrian crossing outside Ickleford Primary School with associated speed cushions on Arlesey Road, and a further series of speed cushions on Turnpike Lane received support from 67.5% and 63.1% of those who responded respectively. Importantly, analysis of the results shows that those residents living in the immediate vicinity of those two roads were as supportive of the proposals (67.5% and 74.3% in favour) as the rest of Ickleford. Road safety improvements for Bedford Road and Chambers Lane received comprehensive support from residents with 85.4% and 82.8% of respondents in favour.

‘The excellent response rate to the survey, and the amount of interest generated during the public meeting justifies the village-wide consultation which we proposed,’ said Miles Maxwell, Vice-Chairman of Ickleford Parish Council. ‘I am very pleased that there has been such a clear cut decision from the residents.’

The next steps will be discussed by the Parish Council at the meeting on 13th November. In the mean time, the results will be shared with Hertfordshire Highways, and together with representatives of the Parish Council a final list from the recommended items of work will be developed. ‘This will then allow Hertfordshire Highways to progress their funding request, and for the detailed design phase to begin.' said Tim Stephenson, Chair of the Ickleford Traffic and Transport Group.

This is the culmination of years of perseverance by the Parish Council to deliver improved safety in Ickleford. Coupled with the support from Highways the proposed measures will in part go some way to achieving Council’s aim. We look forward to working with Hertfordshire Highways to implement a safer environment for everyone.
